Shelf-Life Treasures

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth
corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for
yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt,
and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure
is, there will your heart be also.” (Matthew 6:19-21)
Temporal things are prone to destruction… They are subject and liable to
be taken from us; therefore there is no security in them.
Jesus makes us a better offer, by saying you need to “…lay up for
yourselves treasures in heaven…”
What makes this option better and more secure?
Treasures laid up in heaven are not predisposed to ruin nor are they liable
to be stolen. In other words they have an eternal shelf life. Perishable
items in a grocery store have as shelf life. This simply means the items
being sold have a limited amount of time in which they are usable or fit
for consumption and therefore after their expiration date has passed so
has their value.
Treasures laid up on earth have a shelf life. It doesn’t matter what the item
or pursuit may be, there is only has a limited amount of time that it may
offer us something of value or provide us with an advantage. Even if this
possession or quest proves to be the source of substantial value in this life,
it still has an expiration date and when that date passes so does its value;
it’s no longer fit for use.
Jesus makes us a better offer; one that allows us to hoard up treasures that
have an eternal shelf life. They do not lose their value and they are secure.
Where is your treasure? Jesus says, “Where your treasure is there here
your heart will be also.” Where’s your heart?
